Phosphorus from the fertilizer leads to run off into the water streams, runs into cyanobacteria and creates algae. The overpopulation of algae reduces marine oxygen levels to such an extent that naturally occurring organisms can no longer survive, like phytoplankton, which is a primary contributor to the reduction of CO2. Now when pharmaceutical waste is added to the mix, it provides the necessary conditions for bacteria like, Vibrio Vulnificus, to thrive. And where is it dumped? Right into local bodies of water.
